Catalysis and Chemical Engineering

Craig L. Hill, the Goodrich White Professor at Emory University, has been studying catalysis, reaction mechanisms and materials science for years. Current research focuses on solar fuels, catalytic and multi-electron transfer processes, nanoscale materials and polyoxometalates. He has received three ACS awards, many others, is a Fellow of AAAS, the Victorian Institute of Chemical Sciences, the Academia Europaea, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has chaired NSF and NRC committees, several conferences, edited a journal and been a nominator for 1992-present Nobel Prizes in Chemistry. His H-index (GS) and D-index are ~101.

Chunshan Song is the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Wei Lun Professor of Chemistry at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shatin, NT). He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Fuel Science and Chemical Engineering, the former Director of EMS Energy Institute and former Associate Director of Institutes of Energy and the Environment at the Pennsylvania State University where he was the founding Director of the University Coalition for Fossil Energy Research (UCFER) consisting of 15 major US research universities funded by US Department of Energy-National Energy Technology Lab. He received his BSc in Chemical Engineering from Dalian University of Technology, China, MSc and PhD in Applied Chemistry from Osaka University, Japan. His research focuses on catalysis and chemistry of energy and fuels including CO2 capture and utilization, energy conversion, hydrocarbon processing, shape-selective catalysis, synthesis of nano-porous materials for adsorptive and catalytic applications. He has published over 500 referred journal articles, 16 edited books, 33 book chapters and has invented 8 patents (with H-index 106 and total cites of 48,400 in Google Scholar, Apr 2024). He has been named on the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University on the career-long list and on the single-year list, and the Top 50 Most Cited Scientists in the sub-field of Energy research worldwide.His creative research contributions have been recognized by many awards and honors such as George A. Olah Award and Henry H. Storch Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS), ACS Fellow, Distinguished Fulbright Scholar Award (US-UK), Chang Jiang Scholar Award from MOE China, Outstanding Achievement Award from the Chinese American Chemical Society (CACS), ACS Energy & Fuels Division Distinguished Researcher Award, Herman Pines Award from Catalysis Club of Chicago and Catalysis Club of Philadelphia Award. Within Penn State, he has received the Faculty Scholar Medal, Distinguished University Professor, Wilson Award for Excellence in Research, Faculty Mentoring Award, and Materials Science and Engineering Service Award. He also served on the advisory board for US DOE EFRC and US NSF ERC and several State Key Labs in China as well as industrial organizations including BP, ExxonMobil and Saudi Aramco. He has been on advisory board for 15 research journals in energy and fuels, catalysis, and chemical science and engineering.

Dr. Sheng Dai is currently a corporate fellow and section head overseeing four research groups in the areas of separations and polymer chemistry at Chemical Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His current research interests include ionic liquids, porous materials, and their applications for separation sciences and energy storage as well as catalysis by nanomaterials. His research has led to the Max Bredig Award for Ionic Liquids and Molten Salts, the ACS Award in Separation Science and Technology, and IMMA Award given by International Mesostructured Materials Association. He is a Distinguished Scientist Fellow (2022), US Department of Energy.

Professor Jae Sung Lee received his BS degree from Seoul National University in 1975, MS degree from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 1977, and PhD degree from Stanford University in 1984. After a brief tenure at Catalytica Inc. as a research fellow, he returned to his native Korea to become a professor of chemical engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). He and his group moved to Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in 2013. He has been leading a research group of the “eco-friendly catalysis and energy laboratory”, whose research interests are focused on photocatalysis for energy applications, electrocatalysis for water splitting, and heterogeneous catalysis of CO2 utilization. He has special interest in solar fuel production viaphotoelectrochemicalcells or photovoltaic-electrolyzer systems. He served as the President of Korean Association of Photo Science (KAPS) and the Treasurer of Asian Pacific Association of Catalysis Societies (APACS). He is (or was) in the editorial boards of Journal of Catalysis, Applied Catalysis, Journal of Molecular Catalysis, ChemCatChem, Catalysts, Catalysis Letters, and Topics in Catalysis. He has served as a technical advisor for many Korean chemical companies including Sam Sung Petrochemicals, Sam Sung Advanced Institute of Technology, and LG Chemicals. He was the recipient of Green Energy Prize 2005 (Korean Society of Energy Engineering) and Yeosan Catalysis Research Prize 2010 (Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers).He has ⁓439peer-reviewed publications (40 highly cited papers), including Nat. Catal., Nat. Commun.,J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.,Energy Environ. Sci.,Adv. Mater.and more. He has~29,386 citations with an H-index ~92and ~100 granted patents as of Feb. 2023.

Vasudevanpillai Biju is a Professor at the Research Institute for Electronic Science and Graduate School of Environmental Science at Hokkaido University. He assumed this position after a research career - as a scientist and a senior scientist in AIST, Japan (2004-2015), a PRESTO researcher of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST, 2010-2014), a visiting Scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, USA (2007), a postdoctoral fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, USA (2003-2004), a JSPS postdoctoral fellow in AIST, Japan (2002-2003), and a research scientist at Angstrom Technology Partnership, Japan (2000-2002). He has been a visiting faculty in many universities, including in Japan, the US, and India. He has been a member of the board of studies/faculty evaluation/faculty screening/project screening committees of academic and government bodies in Japan, India, New Zealand, Chili, Taiwan, the European Union, Singapore, etc. He was a SPARC fellow of the Science and Engineering Research Board of India and an Erudite Fellow of the Bard of Higher Education, Kerala, India. His research interests include semiconductor nanocrystals and quantum dots, photo-functional molecules, nanobiotechnogy, and single-molecule techniques. His research activities are recognized with various awards by the Ozaki Foundation (Gen-nai Prize and Gen-nai Award), the Japanese Photochemistry Association, the Asian and Oceanian Photochemistry Association, and the Chemical Society of Japan. Dr. Ram Gupta is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Pittsburg State University. He is the Director of Research at the National Institute for Materials Advancement (NIMA). Dr. Gupta has been recently named by Stanford University as being among the top 2% of research scientists worldwide. Before joining Pittsburg State University, he worked as an Assistant Research Professor at Missouri State University, Springfield, MO then as a Senior Research Scientist at North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC. Dr. Gupta’s research spans a range of subjects critical to current and future societal needs including: semiconducting materials & devices, biopolymers, flame-retardant polymers, green energy production & storage using nanostructured materials & conducting polymers, electrocatalysts, optoelectronics & photovoltaics devices, organic-inorganic heterojunctions for sensors, nanomagnetism, biocompatible nanofibers for tissue regeneration, scaffold & antibacterial applications, and bio-degradable metallic implants. Bernt Johannessen completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and later earned a PhD from the Australian National University in Canberra. He has been involved with X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and related techniques for over 20 years, including over 15 years as a beamline scientist. He now holds the position of Senior Scientist and Beamline Responsible at the XAS Beamline in Melbourne. His academic interests include Catalysis and Energy Storage. He holds an honorary fellowship position with the University of Wollongong.

Dr. Cai received his Doctor of Science degree at the College of Chemical Science and Engineering, Tongji University, in 2022. Subsequently, he works as a distinguished associate professor at the College of Environmental Sciences, Sichuan Agricultural University, teaching environmental chemistry, environmental information systems, and ecological risk assessment. He is also an active member of the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences. Dr. Cai’s research is at the intersection of environmental science, chemistry, and toxicology, aiming to elucidate the principles behind agricultural environmental degradation and innovate comprehensive remediation technologies. In the realm of scientific research projects, Dr. Cai has presided several important initiatives, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Founded by China Postdoctoral Science Foundation and Sichuan Science and Technology Program, et al. Dr. Cai has made significant contributions to his field, evidenced by his 20 publications in journals such as Environ. Sci. & Technol., Chem. Eng. J., and Small. Valentina Migliorati is a Researcher at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. She graduated magna cum laude in Chemistry in 2006 and in 2009 she earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences at the University of Roma “La Sapienza” with a final dissertation entitled "A combined theoretical and experimental investigation of Ion Hydration". The main research topic of Valentina Migliorati is the investigation of the structural and dynamic properties of disordered and complex systems by means of novel integrated approaches developed by her research group that combines X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation techniques. Her scientific interests encompass several fields of Physical Chemistry, such as the development of classical force fields by using ab initio calculations, the study of aqueous solutions of metal, lanthanide and halide ions by means of either Classical or ab initio MD simulations in combination with XAS experimental data, and the investigation of the solvation properties of metal ions in organic solvents. Moreover, she dedicated herself to the study of pure ionic liquids, of ionic liquid/water mixtures, of the solvation properties of metal salts dissolved into ionic liquids and of Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES). Dr. Gnanaprakasam Janani received her B. Sc. and M. Sc. in Physics in 2011 and 2013 from Bharathiar University, India. She obtained her Ph. D. degree in Material Science and Engineering at Chonnam National University, Rep. of Korea, in 2022, working with Prof.Uk Sim. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Hydrogen Energy, Korea Institute of Energy Technology, Rep. of Korea. She has broad interests in energy conversion and storage devices in the specific areas of bifunctional/multifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting and rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Julien G. Mahy is a chemical engineer from the University of Liège (ULiège, Belgium). He made a PhD thesis, under the supervision of Pr. Stéphanie Lambert and Pr. Benoît Heinrichs, focused on the development of a TiO 2 aqueous sol-gel process in order to produce, at large scale, photocatalysts with hydrophilic property and high activity, both under visible and UV/visible light, for water and air remediation. In 2018, after a short period working in industry in CRM group as project leader, he accepted a postdoctoral position in collaboration between the NCE (ULiège) and the “Institut für Energie- und Umwelttechnik e.V. (IUTA)”, Duisburg (Germany) to work on the development of a quaternary treatment for water in order to degrade residual organic micropollutants using oxidation processes. From July 2019 to June 2021, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Condensed Matter and Nanosciences (IMCN) at the Université catholique de Louvain under the supervision of Pr. Sophie Hermans. The work consisted in the development of low-cost sensors for air pollution detection by producing onion-like composite nanoparticles. Since October 2021, he is FNRS postdoctoral researcher at the Université de Liège with the support of Pr. Stéphanie Lambert and Pr Nathalie Job and at the INRS, Québec, with the support of Pr. Patrick Drogui. His work consists in the development of inorganic materials and processes in environmental applications such as water and air decontamination process by photocatalysis, adsorption and electrochemistry. JGM has published over 50 publications and has an h‐index of 15. He is Guest Editor of four Special Issues in the journal Catalysts and of one special issue in the journal Processes.

Elwira Bisz is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Opole (Poland). She received her Ph.D. in polymer chemistry from the University of Opole in 2016, where her dissertation focused on the development of new transition-metal complexes for olefin polymerization. During her doctoral studies she completed research internships at Bayer (Germany) and Mexoplast (Poland). After post-doctoral stints at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich with Prof. Paul Knochel and University of Opole with Prof. Michal Szostak, in 2022she began her independent career at Opole University. Her research group is focused on the development of new synthetic methodology based on transition metal catalysis in organic chemistry and polymer synthesis.

Dr. Hyoung-il Kim is a distinguished Hwalchun Endowed professor at Yonsei University, known for his pioneering research in the field of solar-driven catalysis for water-energy nexus, combined with advanced oxidation processes (AOP), solar fuel production, and (photo)electrochemical wastewater treatment. He earned his Ph.D. from Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in 2014 and subsequently joined Yale University as a postdoctoral scholar, where he conducted cutting-edge research for two and a half years until 2017. In 2017, he joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Yonsei University as an assistant professor, and in 2020, he was appointed as the Hwalchun Endowed Professor.

Dr. Alandra Kahl currently teaches engineering design and sustainable systems at The Pennsylvania State University, Greater Allegheny campus. She received her doctorate in environmental engineering from the University of Arizona in 2013, where her dissertation focused on the fate and transport of contaminants of emerging concern in an arid region. Dr. Kahl’s research interests include engineering of sustainable systems, treatment of emerging contaminants via natural systems and engineering education. She is the author of several technical papers and conference proceedings centered on environmental engineering. Her professional affiliations include the Society of Toxicology and Chemistry, the American Chemical Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education.

Marlena Kardela received her M.Sc. degree from the University of Opole in 2020, working on iron-catalyzed Kumada cross-coupling reactions. Currently, she is a PhD student at the University of Opole working on new methods of earth-abundant 3d metal cross-coupling reactions in the group ofProf. Elwira Bisz. Her research interests include organometallic chemistry and base metal catalysis.

Katarzyna Halikowska-Tarasek received her M. Sc. degree from the University of Opole in 2021, working on nickel-catalyzed Kumada cross-coupling reactions. Currently,she is a doctoral student at the University of Opole, in the group of Prof. Elwira Bisz. In her research she is focusing on synthesis and catalytic activity of the preciousmetal complexes with new groupof multidentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligands. Pamela Podchorodecka received her M.Sc. degree from the University of Opole in 2020, working on theiron-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Dr. Alshawabkeh is the George A. Snell Professor of Engineering, a University Distinguished Professor and Senior Associate Dean for Research and Global Campus for the College of Engineering at Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts. He received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Louisiana State University. He is the Director of the PROTECT Superfund Research Program (SRP) Center, funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). His areas of expertise are in soil behavior, contaminant fate and transport, groundwater remediation and health impacts. Dr. Alshawabkeh’s current research is focused on assessment of contamination exposure through aquifers in karst regions, and potential impacts of remediation strategies on public health. He is a Fulbright Scholar, a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineering and a recipient of the 2014 ASCE Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award

Professor Tudor Spataru studied at the Chisinau State University, Republic of Moldova, and graduated in 1972. He received her Ph.D. degree in 1983 at the same institution. Long time is an Associate at the Department of Chemistry, Columbia University, and a Professor at the City University of New York.

Dr. Abdulmajeed Alayyaf has received his Doctor of Philosophy from Oklahoma State University in 2021, Master's degree from East Tennessee State University in 2016, and Bachelor's degree from King Saud University. He started his academic career as a teaching assistant at King Saud University, then was sent for postgraduate studies, and eventually returned to work as a faculty member at the university and as an assistant professor in organic chemistry. Research Interests: Catalysis and Surface Chemistry, Nanocrystalline Materials, Renewable Energy Chemical Applications, Green Reactions.

Moaz M. Abdouwas born in Egypt. He has obtained his PhD in the synthetic organic chemistry from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom. Now, he is working as a researcher in the Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute. He was awarded the Egyptian Scholarship of Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (2009-2012). He received the Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT) at the University of Osaka, Japan, from 2014 to 2016. His research interests cover the synthesis of medicinally active heterocyclic compounds, and asymmetric catalysis. He is a regular reviewer and a member of editorial board of multiple peer-reviewed journals. Moazis an academic member of The American Chemical Society, Royal Chemical Society, Chemical Society of Japan, and Pharmaceutical Society of Japan.

Arif E. Cetin is a Group Leader in Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG), locating in Izmir, Turkey. Dr. Cetin received his BS degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and MS degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering both from Koc University, Istanbul, Turkey. He received his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Boston University, Boston, MA, USA. He worked as a postdoctoral associate at EPFL (Swiss Federal School in Lausanne), Switzerland in 2013–2014, as a postdoctoral fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, USA in 2014–2016, and as a research scientist at Omniome Inc., San Diego, CA, USA in 2016–2018. Dr. Cetin pursues research on optical nano-biosensors integrated with microfluidic platforms for ultra-sensitive label-free biodetection. He developed hand-held biosensors for high-throughput and multiplexed biosensing for resource-poor settings. Dr. Cetin developed electro-mechanical sensors for growth rate cytometer to determine therapeutic susceptibility of cancer cells for personalized drug therapy.

Luan Yucheng has been engaged in the research and development and industrialization of nanomaterials for more than 20 years, graduated from the Department of Chemistry of Jilin University (China) in 1999, and then worked in Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1999 to 2002, engaged in polymer processing and physical chemistry. He then studied as a PhD student in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Southampton (February 2002-February 2005) and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh (2005-2006), where he conducted research on mesoporous materials and combinatorial chemistry. He then returned to China and was interested in the use of nanomaterials in the energy sector. In 2008, he founded Uninano Advanced Material Co., Ltd. Dr. Pangkuan Chen has completed his PhD from Rutgers University with Prof. Frieder Jӓkle, and postdoctoral studies from MIT with Prof. Niels Holten-Andersen. He is the full professor of Beijing Institute of TechnologySchool of Chemistry, and he also serves as the director of Beijing Key Laboratory of Photoelectronic/Electrophotonic Conversion Materials. He has published more than 60 papers in reputed journals. His current research builds on organoborane chemistry, π-conjugated macrocycles, Near Infrared (NIR) circularly polarized luminescence, chiral radical chemistry and dynamic B/N Lewis pairs.

Professor Ziyi Zhong's primary research areas are heterogeneous catalysis, surface chemistry, and wastewater treatment. He earned his Ph.D. in 1995 from Nanjing University. Then, he pursued post-doctoral research at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, the University of Washington, and the National University of Singapore for a total of 5 years. From 2003 to 2018, he served as a senior scientist at the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences under A*STAR in Singapore. Since 2018, he has been a full professor at Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT). As of January 2024, he has authored or co-authored approximately 260 international journal papers, 7 book chapters, and 10 granted patents (including 3 U.S. patents) with an h-index of 72 (according to Google Scholar). His work has been cited around 19200 times. Furthermore, he has contributed around 30 technical project reports to the industry.

Professor Men Zhuowu achieved his PhD degree from University of Petroleum (East China) in 2000. He was engaged in the development of hydrogenation and indirect coal liquefaction technology in Sinopec Petrochemical Research Institute and Beijing Research Institute of China Shenhua Coal to liquid Corporation. He is the chief expert of CHN Energy Group Corp and director of Coal Indirect Liquefaction Technology R&D Centre in National Institute of Clean-and-Low-Carbon Energy (NICE). He is also the editorial board member of American Journal of Chemical Engineering, Low-Carbon Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (China) and Energy Science and Technology(China). As the project leader, he undertook the coal indirect liquefaction project of the 13th and 14th Five-Year National Key Research and Development Program of China. .

Dr. Xing Sun is currently an Associate Researcher of Northwestern Polytechnical University. He obtained his Ph.D. from Zhejiang University and conducted his postdoc research in NPU as a specially funded postdoctoral fellow from 2021 to 2023. His research focuses on the physicochemical process in the regenerative cooling structure of advanced propulsion systems applying metal or carbon fiber-reinforced ceramic composite materials, under the sponsorships of National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Key Lab Fund Project, etc. He was selected into China National Postdoctoral Program for Innovative Talents in 2022. He currently serves on the Young Editorial Board of Propulsion Technology.

Prof. Emiliano Laudadio received the Ph.D. degree (summa cum laude) in Biomolecular Sciences from the Polytechnic University of Marche (UnivPM), Ancona, Italy, in 2016. Since 2018, he has been a Researcher of Chemical Fundamentals of Technologies with the Department of Materials, Environmental Sciences and Urban Planning, UnivPM. He is professor of General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at the faculties of Engineering and Medicine of UnivPM. He has corresponding authored over 20 peer-reviewed papers, author of the book chapter “Frontiers in Computational Chemistry,” one patent, and he presented more than 30 conference papers. His main research areas are in-silico atomistic methods based on density functional theory, semiempirical approaches, and Molecular Dynamics simulations on natural and synthetic solid and liquid systems. Dr. Zhu graduated from Wuhan Institute of Technology in 1997 with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, followed by obtaining a Master's Degree in Organic Chemistry from Wuhan University in 2002. Next, Dr. Zhu attained his PhD degree in 2006 from the Department of Chemistry at Hong Kong Baptist University. Following the completion of his doctoral studies, Dr. Zhu delved into post-doctoral research, initially at the Department of Chemistry, University of Texas at Austin from 2006 to 2008, and subsequently at the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology from 2008 to 2010. Dr. Zhu then transitioned into academia, commencing his career as a Research Assistant Professor and later as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Hong Kong Baptist University. Currently Dr. Zhu serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Hong Kong Baptist University, and his research interests are primarily centered around the design and synthesis of porphyrin materials for a diverse array of applications, ranging from organic solar cells and artificial photosynthesis to electrocatalysis. His research has garnered significant attention within the scientific community, evidenced by a remarkable total citation count of 6072 and an impressive h-index of 45, reflecting the breadth and depth of his scholarly influence.
